Gumpoldskirchen

Gumpoldskirchen

From Mödling, follow the scenic Weinstrasse (an unnumbered road to the west of the rail line) through the lush vineyard country to the famous wine-producing village of Gumpoldskirchen. This tiny village on the eastern slopes of the last Alpine rocks has lived for wine for 2,000 years, and its white wines enjoy a widespread fame. Vintners' houses line the main street, many of them with the typical large wooden gates that lead to vine-covered courtyards where the Heuriger (wine of the latest vintage) is served by the owner and his family at simple wooden tables with benches. Gumpoldskirchen also has an arcaded Renaissance town hall and a market fountain made from a Roman sarcophagus.
