From the end of April to mid-October, and on the Advent weekends (weather permitting), the rack railway trip from St. Wolfgang to the 5,800-foot peak of the Schafberg offers a great chance to survey the surrounding countryside from what is acclaimed as the "belvedere of the Salzkammergut lakes." On a clear day you can almost see forever—at least as far as the Lattengebirge mountain range west of Salzburg. Because crowds are likely, reserve in advance or start out early.
Train. The train itself is a curiosity dating from 1893, and does not run in bad weather. It departs daily from the end of April to mid-October every hour from 9:15 am to 5:10 pm. Allow at least a good half day for the outing, which costs €29. 06138/2232–0. 06138/2232–9705.
