"The Blue Goose" has always been a popular option—its location on the main shopping drag of Getriedegasse is tops. It has a 400-year-old pedigree and still retains its ancient wood beams, winding corridors, and low archways. Works by avant-garde artists such as Erich Shobesberger, Christian Ecker, and Waldemar Kufner adorn the walls. Upstairs, the guest rooms have whitewashed walls with cheeky framed posters and cheerful curtains; a few have skylights. The popular restaurant has lively contemporary art on the walls and nouvelle Austrian delights on the dishes. Now that Salzburg's profile in the modern-art world has expanded considerably with its new Museum der Moderne, artists and curators are touching down here, so be sure to make reservations well in advance. Pros: spacious rooms; near the sights; close to shopping. Cons: on a noisy street.
