Gasthof Hohlwegwirt
Gasthof Hohlwegwirt Review
It's worth a detour on the way to Hallein along the B159 Salzachtal-Bundesstrasse about 10 km (6 mi) south of Salzburg to dine at this inviting inn, run by the same family for more than 130 years. Enjoy the cooking, the wine cellar filled with more than 100 different vintages, and the unmistakable atmosphere of this stile Salzburg house with its nicely decorated salons. Chef Ernst Kronreif uses his mother's recipes for the delicious Butternockerlsuppe (soup broth with buttered dumplings), the Kalbsbries (calf's sweetbreads), or the Salzburger Bierfleisch (beef boiled in beer)—all Salzburgian classics and yet always so up-to-date.

Once you find it (the address in the guide book is incorrect, should be Salzburgerstraße 84), you'll be wonderfully taken care of. Ernst, the owner, speaks flawless English and is more than happy to ply you with any and all of the regional specialties the lengthy menu offers. We enjoyed a selection of house-made patés, all of them delicious. Roasted Alpine salmon was perfectly cooked and astonishingly delicate. Ernst guided us to local wines that paired very well with the cuisine. he then proceeded to invite us back for breakfast the next morning, an offer we were more than happy to accept: homemade breads and preserves, great coffee, and a cheese and meat selection that was over the top. The hospitality here is a hallmark of an established, family-run hotel/restaurant of high quality.
