Marionettentheater

Fodor's Review:

The Salzburger Marionettentheater is both the world's greatest marionette theater and—surprise!—a sublime theatrical experience. Many critics have noted that viewers quickly forget the strings controlling the puppets, which assume lifelike dimensions and provide a very real dramatic experience. The Marionettentheater is identified above all with Mozart's operas, which seem particularly suited to the skilled puppetry; a delightful production of Così fan tutte captures the humor of the work better than most stage versions. The theater itself is a Rococo concoction. The company is famous for its world tours, but is usually in Salzburg around Christmas, during the late-January Mozart Week, at Easter, and from May to September (schedule subject to change).

  • Cost: EUR 18-EUR 35
  • Open: Box office Mon.-Sat. 9-1 and 2 hrs before performance; Salzburg season May-Sept., Christmas, Mozart Week (Jan.), Easter
