For years St. Johann lived in the shadow of Kitzbühel, but today the town, with its colorfully painted houses, has developed a personality of its own, and for better or worse is equally mobbed winter and summer. The facilities are similar, but prices are still lower, although climbing. (The dark horses here could be Kirchdorf, 4 km [2½ mi] north of St. Johann, where costs appear to be holding, or Fieberbrunn, 12 km east on Route 164.)
While in St. Johann, don't miss the magnificently decorated Baroque parish church or the Gothic Spitalskirche, with its fine late-medieval stained glass, just west of town in Weitau.
