Schwaz

The Habsburg emperors in the 15th and 16th centuries owed much of their wealth to the silver and copper extracted from the mines here by the Fugger family, bankers and traders who emigrated from Augsburg. First mentioned in the 10th century and incorporated as a town in the 12th century, Schwaz, on the south bank of the Inn, evolved into a rich and important mining center.
