Adored by everyone from the Duke of Windsor to Kirk Douglas, this Alpine Shangri-la is set in a huge garden. Inside the hilltop mountain inn you'll find a space that is at once rustic and glamorous, with gold chandeliers hung over country cupboards and silk-covered sofas next to shuttered windows. The guest rooms are all different, some with ceramic stoves or even open fireplaces. The house itself is a 400-year-old farmhouse, so don't be surprised if you sleep in the hand-painted bed of the original owner. The public rooms are cozy and inviting. Breakfast is served either on the terrace or in the atmospheric parlors. Pros: aristocratic flair; great breakfast; nice garden. Cons: some find it too formal; some standard rooms face parking lots.
