Austria's highest village, tiny Obergurgl gained its reputation not only for superb winter sports but also as the place where the Swiss physicist Auguste Piccard landed his famous stratospheric balloon in 1931. In winter a vast expanse of snow and ice shimmers all around you, and the great peaks and glaciers of the Ötztal Alps appear deceptively close all year.
