Schloss Halbturn

Schloss Halbturn Review

Halbturn contains the exquisite Baroque Schloss Halbturn, an imperial hunting lodge built in 1710 by Lukas von Hildebrandt, the great architect of the period. This restored jewel was once used by Empress Maria Theresa as a summer residence and is noted for its ceiling frescoes. Devastated by Russian troops in the occupation following World War II, then rebuilt in the 1970s, the castle now houses special annual exhibitions. A stroll through the large, wooded surrounding park is pleasant anytime, but in late spring when the red-and-pink chestnut trees are in bloom, the spectacle easily rivals a Monet painting. In the courtyard a shop sells excellent wines from Halbturn vineyards, and a small art museum displays a copy of Gustav Klimt's impressive Beethoven Frieze, with the decided advantage over the Vienna original that here you can see the details up close.
