Skiing

Zell am See-Kaprun. There's good skiing on the slopes immediately above the town. Most of the runs are intermediate, but there are good areas for beginners, too, and experts will find some steepish, sweeping runs on which to have fun if not be truly tested. Towering over Zell am See, the Schmittenhöhe has tree-lined runs that will feel familiar to Colorado and New England skiers. Kitzsteinhorn mountain, which rises to 10,499 feet above Kaprun, has year-round glacier skiing and was the first glacier ski area in Austria. Together these mountains offer 57 lifts, with 130 km (80 miles) of prepared slopes. In addition, there are more than 200 km (124 miles) of cross-country trails and eight ski schools. 06542/770; www.zellamsee-kaprun.com.
