From Hermagor, both Route 87, running northwest to Greifenburg, and Route 111 up to the adjoining villages of Kötschach and Mauthen offer gorgeous views, and the distances to Lienz on both are about 55 km (35 mi). If you choose Route 87, you can turn right shortly before Greifenburg for a detour to the blue-green Weissensee, a relatively undeveloped narrow lake 11 km (7 mi) long, tucked in between high mountain ridges, where the fishing and boating are excellent and, in winter, ice-skating and cross-country skiing are as well. At Greifenburg turn west onto Route 100 up the Drau River valley toward Lienz. Or, from Kötschach, drive north on Route 110 to reach Oberdrauburg, then west onto Route 100.
