Carinthia Places

St. Veit an der Glan

The capital of Carinthia until 1518, this old ducal city remains largely unchanged, with the town hall's Baroque facade and ancient patrician houses forming the main square. Be sure to walk into the arcaded Renaissance courtyard of the Rathaus (Town Hall), overflowing with flowers in summer; the main state rooms can be seen on guided tours. The 12th-century Romanesque Pfarrkirche (parish church) was later given Gothic overtones; note the attractive entry. The ducal palace, Schloss St. Veit, at the north end of town, now houses a small medieval collection; the building itself has a marvelous arcaded stairway in the courtyard.
