Westin St. John Resort and Villas Review

The island's largest resort provides a nice beachfront location and enough activities to keep you busy. That said, most guests rent a car for at least a couple of days to explore the area's many lovely beaches. The hotel is spread over 47 beachfront acres adjacent to Great Cruz Bay, with lushly planted gardens and a white sandy beach that beckons sunbathers. Rooms are a tad tired, but renovations are in the works. Those strung out behind the beach put you closest to the water, but even the hillside villas are only a seven-minute stroll from the sand.

    We Enjoyed Our Stay

My husband and I just returned from a 4 day stay at the Westin St. John. This was our first visit to St. John but have stayed at several Westin hotels. I do agree with the official review of the rooms: nothing special compared to the Westin high standards. However when you are in a tropical paradise, all you really need is a clean room, comfortable bed and a balcony to enjoy the island breezes. The Westin St. John provided all this and more. The restaurants were great, the beach small-ish but plenty of chairs and umbrellas. There were all types of beach activities available: jet skis, paddle boats, etc. We only took advantage of the sunset catamaran sail which was spectacular! We didn't see a need to rent a car; the roads are small and at times crowded. We took one of the plentiful cabs to get around (including to check out the Caneel Resort). The restaurants (Asolare, Stone Terrace, Paradiso)in Cruz Bay were phenomenal, too. We'd go back in a second!

Westin St. John Resort and Villas Review

This is not a place for couples seeking a romantic getaway. It is an overcrowded, crazed family-oriented resort on a third rate bay on St John. Every morning before 7am, you need to be out at the pool and beach staking out your chairs if you ever hope to sit anywhere all day long. It is way too over-sold and the property is definitely showing signs of wear. The concierge staff could care less about your needs as evidenced by the lack of response to most my calls and emails prior to visiting, plus they failed to reserve a rental car as promised. Each meal took no less than an hour to prepare, so make sure to bring a book. The bill was computed differently each time. And, the strange automatic gratuity practice, even if ordering one drink at the bar, was a big turn off. They even added an automatic gratuity to the supposedly complementary continental breakfast! The "free" water sports equipment is in dire need of replacement. And, after making reservations to rent power boats from them with a signed contract, they called to cancel stating they over booked reservations and none were available the rest of the trip. At checkout, each of the six other people at the counter all had problems with charges on their final statement. Mine took over a half hour to get corrected.
