Coral Bay

Updated 03/04/2014

Fodor's Review

This laid-back community at the island's dry, eastern end is named for its shape rather than for its underwater life—the word coral comes from krawl, Dutch for "corral." Coral Bay is growing fast, but it's still a small, neighborly place. You'll probably need a four-wheel-drive vehicle if you plan to stay at this end of the island, as some of the rental houses are up unpaved roads that wind around the mountain. If you come just for lunch, a regular car

will be fine.

Coral Bay Review

Most people that get off the ferry in St John at Cruz Bay will ultimately put on a pair of fins and a snorkeklng mask and head for the nearest beach.Actually any beach with some nice rocky bolders will provide a view of interesting marine life. A resident of the Virgin Islands for two years and was able to discovered some excellent spots you might consider, and there are many more than these.Everyone has heard of Trunk

Bay and its snorkeling trail, however the beat snorkeling on Trunk Bay is actually on the far west end Of the Trunk Bay beach, where the rock boulders begin..Another great beach for families to snorkel in calm shallow waters is Oppenheimer Beach just east of Hawks Nest Beach.Lots of coral and marine lifr here...There is also great snorkeling to be found at Waterlemon Cay..A small cay about 200 yds off shore in LanisterBay..Waterlemon also has a nice small beach..Lots of starfish and coral..So if your headed to St John,be sure to pack the fins and snorkeling mask..The snorkeling doesn't get any better http://www.travelaskthelocals.yolasit... Only if it's on the way

If you are travling to a beach near there, or you pass it, I recomend visiting it. I wouldn't drive the whole way there just to see Coral Bay. If you go there, there is a very cute shop. It had shirts, jewelry(junder $10), shoes, and other things. I forget the name, but I found that it was a great store.
