Fodor's Expert Review Fort Frederik
On July 3, 1848, some 8,000 slaves marched on this fort to demand their freedom. Danish governor Peter von Scholten, fearing they would burn the town to the ground, stood up in his carriage parked in front of the fort and granted their wish. The fort, completed in 1760, has walls constructed of coral and rubble bound together with molasses, a testament to the ingenuity and durability of 18th-century engineering. Climb the battlements for great views of the cruise dock and the Caribbean Sea. Inside, a museum includes exhibits on the slave trade, Mocko Jumbies, seashells and sea glass, indigenous artifacts from Salt River Bay, and local mahogany furniture.
