Getting Oriented

Although there are things to see and do in St. Croix's two towns, Christiansted and Frederiksted (both named after Danish kings), there are lots of interesting spots in between them and to the east of Christiansted. Just be sure you have a map in hand (pick one up at a rental-car agency, or stop by the tourist office for an excellent one that's free). Many secondary roads remain unmarked; if you get confused, ask for help. Locals are always ready to point you in the right direction.

  • Christiansted. The island's main town has restaurants, shops, and a few places to stay.
  • West of Christiansted. This busy area includes a handful of condos and restaurants in Estates Golden Rock and Princesse.
  • East End. Most of the larger resorts are on the East End of St. Croix, but there are also some hidden treasures to explore.
  • Mid Island. This extensive area includes a small patch of rain forest, a handful of historic sites, the island's biggest shopping center at Sunny Isles, and a bed-and-breakfast.
  • Frederiksted. The island's westernmost settlement has a smattering of stores, restaurants, activities, and the island's cruise pier.
  • North Shore. Divers head to Cane Bay, while Salt River Bay has excellent kayaking and diving opportunities.
