Salt Cay

Planning Your Time

Only 2½ square mi (6 square km), Salt Cay is so small that you can practically walk around it and soak up its charms in a couple of hours, but you'll have more fun if you rent a golf cart and take your time, ideally spending at least one night on the island. Start at Island Thyme Bistro, whose owner, Porter Williams, is the know-all of Salt Cay. He will provide an orientation package, information about island activities, and if you wish, a box lunch to take to the scenic coastline—where there's whale-watching in season. Try to meet Nick, Candy's brother from Pirates Hideaway; he'll show you pirate graves and the best spots to see beautiful North Beach. If you dive, make an appointment with Debbie of Salt Cay Divers to show you the wrecks. Be sure to drive past the abandoned Governor's Mansion. You'll notice that the walls around each home have embedded conch shells to keep out the donkeys and cows—you'll find yourself stopping frequently for the friendly donkeys, who rule the roads. End your night listening to Gary Stedman play at Coral Reef Bar and Grill. If it's pizza night, head back to Island Thyme Bistro; Porter makes great pizza. If Salt Cay lacks natural beauty, it definitely does not lack character (or is it that it has characters?). By the end of your stay, you will have made some lifelong friends.
