Telephones in Trinidad and Tobago

Telephones

The area code for both islands is 868 ("TNT" if you forget). This is also the country code if you're calling to Trinidad and Tobago from another country. From the United States, just dial "1" plus the area code and number.

To make a local call to any point in the country simply dial the seven-digit local number. Most hotels and guesthouses will allow you to dial a direct international call. To dial a number in North America or the Caribbean simply dial "1" and the U.S. or Canadian area code before the number you're calling, but be warned that most hotels add a hefty surcharge for overseas calls. Calls to Europe and elsewhere can be made by checking for the appropriate direct-dial codes in the telephone directory. To make an international call from a pay phone you must first purchase a "companion" card, which is readily available from most convenience shops—then simply follow the instructions on the card. Cards are available in various denominations.

Cell phones here are GSM, but your cell-phone company must have a roaming agreement with Telecommunications Services of Trinidad and Tobago (TSTT) or Digicel in order for your phone to work here. You can also purchase an SIM card to make local calling cheaper in Trinidad, but you'll be assigned a new phone number.
