Fodor's Expert Review The Carlton Savannah

2–4 Coblentz Ave., St. Ann's, Trinidad, Trinidad and Tobago

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

Those looking for a boutique hotel at a reasonable price away from the noise of downtown may find this property the perfect fit. The simple and functional exterior gives little hint of the stylish decor and clever use of space inside. Rooms are not the largest in town but are well appointed and in no way claustrophobic. The hotel's reputation was helped when Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip, and their entourage chose it as their base during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Conference in 2009. The level of service has slipped since its heyday, and financial difficulties have resulted in the hotel operating under receivership. The situation has resulted in some maintenance and staff training issues. The hotel is a short walk from the northern side of the Queen's Park Savannah, President's House, the botanical gardens, and the zoo.

PROS

  • convenient and quiet location
  • free (but very spotty) Wi-Fi
  • stylish, modern feeling

CONS

  • not within walking distance of shopping
  • while staff are eager the service can sometimes be erratic and even infuriating
  • poor maintenance is showing in the rooms and pool area.
