Built in 1932 on the grounds of a hilltop monastery, this charming, antiques-furnished guesthouse is ideal for budget travelers seeking a chance to observe nature up close. The 800-foot elevation provides excellent views of the plains to the south as well as the 600-odd acres of monastery grounds to the north. Owners Gerard Ramsawak and Oda van der Haijden are gracious and chatty, and over breakfast or dinner, both of which are included, will fill you in on the history of the house and the furniture they have collected from around the world. Afternoon tea in the courtyard is cheap and popular with older locals. Pros: magnificent view of northern Trinidad; bird-watching and hiking trails right outside property; tea on the balcony harks back to simpler times. Cons: accommodations are spartan; no access to shopping or nightlife without a car; guests have to be let in at night.
