The Pitons

Viewpoints, Soufrière

User Rating: ***** 4.9

Fodor's Review:

These two unusual mountains, which rise precipitously from the cobalt blue Caribbean Sea just south of Soufrière, have become the symbol of St. Lucia. Covered with thick tropical vegetation, the massive outcroppings were formed by lava from a volcanic eruption 30 to 40 million years ago. They are not identical twins since -- confusingly -- 2,619-foot Petit Piton is taller than 2,461-foot Gros Piton, though Gros Piton is, as the word translates, broader. Gros Piton is the easier climb, though the trail up even this shorter Piton is one very tough trek and requires the permission of the Forest & Lands Department and a knowledgeable guide.

Mountains worth seeing

Our viewing of the Pitons was from a catamaran cruise, as well as on land. We ate a lovely restaurant on the hillside there, with a magnificent view of the water. Definitely a must see!!

Burn off the rum cake climbing Gros Piton

Wonderful hike - a climb, not a stroll - through shady forests and up, up, UP rock staircases and trails. Two wonderful look out points from the top - one south and east to Fort Vieux and the other north over Soufriere and Castries. Very good guides, a well run organization all around if a bit expensive.
