Fodor's Review:

This beachfront beauty impeccably combines world-class elegance with West Indian hospitality, magically appealing to everyone while scrupulously maintaining and upgrading facilities. Though the public spaces and guest rooms dazzle with mahogany, marble, and crystal, nothing feels overwhelming or overdone. Indeed, consummate taste prevails, redefining the term "understated luxury." Service is smiling and solicitous (aside from an occasionally harried front desk). A beach concierge dispenses everything from books to CDs, circulating regularly with fruit kebabs, Popsicles, and Evian spray. Yes, sometimes it seems overrun by noisy families and conventioneers. And yes, it's pricey. Since all rooms are spacious and elegantly appointed (and the buildings set fairly far back from the water), only those splurging will book the beachfront (or second-floor oceanview rooms -- actually a superior value). Among the amenities here are a state-of-the-art business center, sybaritic spa, and 18-hole Robert Trent Jones, Jr. golf course, as well as a model children's club. Good-value packages -- and complimentary extras such as nonmotorized water sports and twice-weekly golf clinics -- help reduce the sting from the high rates.

Lovely, Unpretentious, Perfect

In two words: understated elegance. This is not a place for people who are wowed by over-the-top excesses. If you need to see Paris Hilton sunning next to you on the beach in order to feel special, then head over to the Four Seasons on Wailea (Maui). But if you like the quiet, calm elegance of a refined place with impeccable manners, then Nevis and the Four Seasons is the place for you. It is simply lovely in its design and ambience. Whoever designed the resort knew enough to let the rich beauty of Nevis be the focal point, instead of building something to compete with it. Every aspect of the hotel, its pools, and the spa all flow beautifully into the natural environment. For example, the three infinity edge pools gracefully follow the natural shoreline creating a seamless integration of one water's edge to the other. The plunging pool in the outdoor portion of the spa was cleverly centered in front of the beautiful Mount Nevis, so when you relax on the chaise lounge, you can view the mountain with the rolling fog on top, motivating Columbus to call the island "Nieves" after the snowcaps in Europe. While in Nevis, take a snorkel cruise with Lenox, (his catamaran is docked on Pinneys Beach), eat dinner in the sugar mill of Montpelier Inn, (reservations is a must!), have a rum and tonic spa treatment, and drink the Nevisian Smile (best drink on the island). The water in Nevis is silvery blue with hints of turquoise, so it's quite different from other Caribbean islands. The staff at the Four Seasons is truly gracious and welcoming. The rooms are airy and comfortable. The bathrooms are spacious and very nice with large tubs and showers. We had a gorgeous ocean front room on Pinneys Beach, but we saw a mountain view room as well, and it opens right on to the golf course, and showcases Mount Nevis. --Either view is wonderful. It's a lovely, relaxing island, and the Four Seasons resort fits beautifully into its surroundings.--But bring your wallet.
