Westin St. Maarten Dawn Beach Resort & Spa Review

Straddling the border between the Dutch and French sides, the modern Westin sits on one of the island's best beaches. An enormous pool, two restaurants, four bars, a state-of-the art spa, fitness center, casino, nightclub, and family-friendly activities give you plenty of choices on-site, and the terrific concierge staff will arrange anything else. The spacious rooms feature the chain's signature Heavenly beds and ample baths, flat-screen TVs, and balconies. The two-bedroom suites and apartments are especially appealing, and if you are thinking about a condo or villa, those at the Westin certainly are worth considering. Don't miss the incredible Sunday brunch on the patio overlooking Dawn Beach, one of the most scenic spots on the island and the place to be at sunrise.

    Not worth the aggravation

We had a huge room. The beach and pool areas are lovely. The people are delightful. But the devil is in the details. First of all, this is not a non-smoking property. It is true that the rooms are (in theory) non-smoking, but the resort has plenty of smoking areas (sand ashtrays attached to garbage cans) blatantly positioned in high traffic areas (front entrance), and even adjacent to outdoor restaurant seating and some rooms. I saw employees and guests smoking on the beach as well, where of course it cannot be prevented. Small things can turn into more than minor annoyances. For the first six days (out of nine) of our stay, we could not get enough towels to shower after a day at the beach. We had to call every day and even then, sometimes the wait was over an hour. One day, we came back at nearly 5PM and they had left us NO towels. Not one. One day, they left the used, wet bathmat (refolded) and a used hand towel and washcloth. This was actually amusing, if annoying. After all, we could bring towels from the pool and gym if absolutely necessary. Still, this hotel bears the Westin name and guests should not have to beg for towels (and toiletries, I might add.) The real reason to think twice about staying here is the wifi. It will make you long for dialup days, where service was faster and more reliable. If you are like many, many people, you might like to tackle some work or related emails while on holiday. Don't count on the service here, for which you pay a daily resort fee. Outrageous and unforgivable.
