Coal Pot Review

Popular since the early 1960s, this tiny (only 10 tables) waterfront restaurant overlooking pretty Vigie Cove is managed by local artist Michelle Elliott and her husband, the French chef Xavier Ribot. For a light lunch, opt for a bowl of creamy pumpkin soup, Greek or shrimp salad, or broiled fresh fish. Dinner might start with a divine lobster bisque, followed by fresh seafood accompanied by one (or more) of the chef's fabulous sauces—ginger, coconut-curry, lemon-garlic butter, or wild mushroom. Heartier eaters may prefer duck, lamb, beef, or chicken laced with peppercorns, red wine, onion, or Roquefort sauce.

    Coal Pot Review

Nice atmosphere but menu was fairly traditional. Place was too traditional for my taste but food was good quality. Staff was a bit standoff-ish but attentive.

Not Nearly as Good as Jacques

Coal Pot is good but far from Very Good or Excellent. We have been to each of the Coal Pot & Jacques twice in the past week. No question, unanimous decisions, Jacques is much better these days.

The Fodors print review is over 2 years out of date as Coal Pot was significantly expanded 2 years ago and is now a "machine" rather than the place it once was (small, personal and very good). We had no trouble getting in with <24 hours notice.

WTS, sauces are still good but the fish was consistently overcooked (6 of 8 portions on the two visits) and they don't like you telling them that... :)
