On the Ground

On the Ground

If you land at George F. L. Charles Airport (also referred to as Vigie Airport), in Castries, it's a short drive to resorts in the north, about 20 minutes to Marigot but more than an hour to Soufrière. Everyone landing at Hewanorra faces a long—though scenic—drive north. Taxis are always available at the airports. If you take one, be sure to agree on the fare before you get in. Between Hewanorra and Soufrière expect to pay $55 to $60 each way per taxi (not per person); between Hewanorra and the resorts near Castries, $70 to $75; between George F. L. Charles (Vigie) Airport and nearby resorts, $15 to $25; between Vigie and Soufrière, $70 to $75. A helicopter transfer from Hewanorra is an attractive option, but it costs $120-plus per person.

Renting a Car: Drive yourself if you want to do some exploring and try lots of restaurants; a car is more of a necessity if you are staying at a small inn or hotel away from the beach. If you're staying at an all-inclusive beach resort, taxis would be a better bet. And driving is on the left, British-style; combined with roads that are often in a state of disrepair, the prospect of driving on the island isn't an inviting one for many travelers.
