Locals consider Friar's Bay, on the Caribbean (southern) side, the island's finest beach. It's a long, tawny scimitar where the water always seems warmer and clearer. Unfortunately, the new indefinitely shelved Marine World development has co-opted nearly half the strand. Still, several hopping, happening bars, including Shipwreck and Sunset Grill, serve terrific, inexpensive local food and cheap, frosty drinks. Chair rentals cost around $3, though if you order lunch you can negotiate a freebie. You can haggle with fishermen here to take you snorkeling off the eastern point, though live coral reefs protect both ends. The waters on the Atlantic (northern) side are rougher, but the beach has a wild, desolate beauty with some good surfing (wind, body, board), though seaweed often washes ashore. Friar's is the first major beach along S.E. Peninsula Drive (a.k.a. Simmonds Highway), approximately a mile southeast of Frigate Bay.
