-. This budget-conscious property, the former Allegro Jack Tar, displays a welcome focus on Kittitian culture, evident in everything from the Kittitian cooking and dialect classes to entertainment ranging from Carnival masqueraders and limbo dancers to local fashion shows to the artworks, crafts, and architectural accents (even the curtains were locally designed). Thirty two-story buildings house sizable fresh rooms (240 reopened in the first two phases, with another 42 gradually being renovated), some split-level with jetted tubs, all with balconies overlooking the ocean, lagoon, or the golf course. Upper floor rooms in the 300 block feel airier and larger, though they're close to the action (for good and bad). The casino offers table games and more than 100 one-armed bandits; the Cane Club pulsates weekends with righteous DJs, and De Lime Beach Bar & Grill has become an island hot spot. Pros: terrific value including regular package deals; friendly staff; respect for island tradition. Cons: can be loud when filled with tour groups; needs further renovation in places; eyesore cinderblock buildings.
