Taxis meet every ferry and flight to St. Kitts or Nevis. The taxis are unmetered, but fixed rates, in EC dollars, are posted at the airport and at the jetty. Note that rates are the same for one to four passengers. On St. Kitts the fares range from EC$32 to Frigate Bay, to EC$69 for the farthest point from the airport. From the airport on Nevis it costs EC$27 to Nisbet Plantation, EC$54 to the Four Seasons, and EC$67 to Montpelier. Before setting off in a cab, be sure to clarify whether the rate quoted is in EC or U.S. dollars. There's a 50% surcharge for trips made between 10 PM and 6 AM.
Renting a Car: If you'd like to dine at the various inns and sightsee for more than one day in St. Kitts, then you should rent a car. If you're staying in the Frigate Bay-Basseterre area, you can get by using taxis and doing a half-day island tour. On Nevis, if you deviate from Main Street in Charlestown, you're likely to have trouble finding your way. You can rent a car for a day or two of exploring, but a tour with a guide is usually easier. On either island, you must get a temporary driving permit (EC$50 on St. Kitts, EC$24 on Nevis); driving is on the left.
