Getting Oriented

St. Kitts, a 65-square-mi (168-square-km) island is 2 mi (3 km) from smaller Nevis, about 40 square mi (121 square km). The two former British colonies are joined in a sometimes strained independence. St. Kitts is often called "The Mother Colony," because it is the first permanent English settlement in the Caribbean.
