Fodor's Expert Review Smoke Alley Beach

The color of the sand varies from light beige to black at this beach, also called Oranje Beach, on the Caribbean side near Gallows Bay. Much of the beach is claimed by the tide's ebb and flow. The waters are relatively calm, making it a good place for a swim—and snorkeling right offshore is good. Some of the island's dive shops are here; others are along the waterfront in Oranjestad. Amenities: food and drink. Best for: swimming, snorkeling.
