You could literally walk from the airport runway into town, but if you want to take a taxi, one or two will be waiting for arriving passengers at the airport, and you'll be whisked into Oranjestad for about $5. To explore the island, car rentals, which cost about $40 to $50 a day, do the job. Statia's roads are generally in good condition (watch out for goats), but there are only two gas stations.
