St. Eustatius' beaches are fairly rocky. The Caribbean side is much better suited for swimming while the Atlantic side is better for walking, beachcombing, and sunning. The more-interesting action is below the waves. Along with Saba, which helps to administer its dive sites as part of the Saba Marine Park, Statia is a major diving destination. It has good wreck diving, coral- and sponge-covered walls and pinnacles, as well as volcanic fissures and canyons. If you want to keep your head above water, then the Quill, Statia's extinct volcano, which holds a primeval rainforest, is well worth your time; a guided hike here will bring you face to face with all manner of exotic tropical flora and even some fauna.
