For two generations, the Charneau family has offered friendly service and reasonable rates at its small hotel, making guests feel like a part of the family. Recent upgrades raise the bar, but not the prices. Handsome, spacious, and comfortable, the airy stone-and-redwood cottages have high ceilings, sturdy furniture, modern baths, open-air kitchenettes, and lovely terraces with hammocks; one has a Jacuzzi and an indoor-outdoor rain-shower. It's even accessible for travelers with disabilities, a rarity on this island of steep hills and rocky steps. You get the advantages of a villa and the services of a hotel here. The regular rooms have refrigerators, and most have king-size beds. In addition, there are three lovely villas of various sizes. Regulars are invited to store beach equipment. The location is great—you can walk to the beach and town from here—and most rooms and cottages have gorgeous views. See if Rooms 12, 15, or 10, perched on the edge of the hillside, are available when you book. The excellent restaurant, Le Cesar ($$-$$$) is open all day long, with occasional live music. Improvements in 2008 include a lovely mahogany massage room and well-equipped gym. Cottages have kitchens; very reasonable summer rates for cottages include a car. Pros: great value; convenient location; wonderful management. Cons: somewhat old-fashioned; can be noisy, depending on how close your room is to the street below.
