Just 8 square mi (21 square km), St. Barths is a hilly island with many sheltered bays. New hotels can never have more than 12 rooms, so you will find no high-rise resorts to spoil your views. The French, who had controlled the island since the late 17th century, gave it to Sweden in 1784 but finally reclaimed it in 1877.
