Saba Hotel Reviews

Saba's few hotel rooms are primarily in a handful of friendly, tidy inns or guesthouses perched on ledges or tucked into tropical gardens. Because the island is so small, it doesn't much matter where you stay. Among the choices are a couple of delightful small inns and splendid, small ecoresorts. There are also more than a dozen apartments, cottages, and villas for rent. Cable TV is common, but air-conditioning is a rarity.

Cottage Club. Form follows function at these gingerbread bungalows, where the price is right and the proximity to downtown is ideal. The reception area is a cozy room with black marble floors and beamed ceilings. The bungalows sprawl down the side of the mountain, affording a bird's-eye view of the surf crashing into the rocks hundreds of feet below. (Nos. 1, 2, and 6 have the most striking vistas.) A pool with an awesome view is tucked away in the trees, giving it the feel of a true tropical hideaway. Each room has a queen-size bed (one room has a king) and TV. Larger rooms have a kitchenette; smaller ones have some kitchen facilities but no stove. Pros: walking distance to Windwardside; lushly landscaped pool with a gorgeous view; majestic lobby-reception room. Cons: stark suites; no on-site dining; some of the walks to the rooms are steep; no a/c. Windwardside. 599/416-2486. www.cottage-club.com. 10 cottages, some wheelchair accessible. In-room: no a/c, kitchen. In-hotel: pool.

El Momo. If you want to feel as if you're doing your ecological part without giving up every modern convenience, consider these tiny cottages. They're hidden among tropical flora 1,500 feet up Booby Hill. All have heated showers and patios. Take in the view from a hammock in the vegetarian snack bar, or lounge by the pool, which has the only bridge on the island. A family-style dinner is available once or twice a week, and drinks can be had at the honor bar. Be sure to pick up a bottle of homemade banana, vanilla, ginger, or chili pepper rum on your way out; it makes a great gift or memento. Pros: snack bar-lounge with hammock; cottages buried in the woods; smoke-free property; Wi-Fi. Cons: tiny accommodations; strenuous hike to get here; no a/c. Booby Hill. 599/416-2265. www.elmomocottages.com. 7 cottages. In-room: no a/c, kitchen (some), no TV, Wi-Fi. In-hotel: pool.

Juliana's Hotel. Reasonable, in town, great views, and accommodations from good to luxurious—it's all here. On one side of the hotel, there's the hill that leads to Windwardside's bustling Main Street; on the other, sweeping views of tropical flora end in glimmering blue. Rooms have Wi-Fi to keep you in touch and balcony hammocks to make you wonder why you want to be anywhere else. Air-conditioning in all but ocean-view rooms (Juliana's is one of the few places on the island that has it) and a game room for the kids are icing on the cake. And for more pricacy, there's the lovely Lily Pod Cottage. Breakfast is included for all accommodations. Pros: across the street from Tropics Café; outdoor, in-rock shower in Orchid Cottage; two on-site computers with free Internet; full breakfast. Cons: close quarters; a hike to get off the property; not all rooms have a/c. Windwardside. 599/416-2269; 888/289 Ext. 5708 USA only. www.julianas-hotel.com. 9 rooms, 1 apartment, 3 cottages. In-room: no a/c (some), Wi-Fi. In-hotel: restaurant, pool. Breakfast.
