At some point during your time in Vieques, you should end up at Duffy's, the island's most popular hangout. Customers crowd around the bar here, which might make you think the food is secondary, and you wouldn't be entirely wrong. You'll find standard burger and fries, but the waterfront restaurant has a chalkboard listing scrawled specials like conch fritters, scallop ceviche, grilled ribeye, and pan-seared pork loin, all a step above your usual beach fare. The rest of the menu fills out with wraps, sandwiches, and fried finger food. So why do people ignore the dozen or so tables scattered around the open-air dining room in favor of sitting elbow-to-elbow at the bar? Turns out that owner Michael Duffy, son of the owner of Chez Shack, is a real character. Locals love chewing the fat with him, and you will, too.
