This longtime, open-air favorite with playful rainforest murals climbing the walls in a prime spot in Esperanza that ogles the Caribbean is geared toward gringos. If you're looking for authentic island food, this isn't your place. But they certainly serve up some good Puerto Rican fare. Claim a spot at one of the curvy red concrete tables or under an umbrella-shade out front and order the red-snapper sandwich (popular at lunchtime), or the jerk chicken. Salads are excellent, including the caribeño (fresh greens with curried chicken), but be sure to save room for the namesake dish—deep fried bananas with finger-lickin' hot honey sauce. When the sun goes down, Bananas is one of the hot spots on this side of the island. With new breakfast items and smoothies on the menu, you can spend the night at the attached no-frills guesthouse and stay through dawn.
