Hacienda Tamarindo Review

The 250 year-old tamarind tree rising more than three stories through the center of the main building gives this plantation-style house and former dance hall its name. With its barrel-tile roof and wood-shuttered windows, it's one of the prettiest hotels on the island. You can easily find a spot all to yourself, whether it's on a shady terrace or beside the pool. Linda Vail, who runs the place with her husband, Burr, decorated each guest room individually. "Caribbean chic" may be the best way to describe her way of combining well-chosen antiques, elegant wicker furniture, and vintage travel posters. The new penthouse is the nicest room on the property with a separate entrance on the third floor, and a massive private terrace overlooking the ocean. The made-to-order breakfasts are a great reason to get up early, and the on-site horseback riding along the beach is a lodging perk.
