La Finca Caribe

Rte. 995, Km 1.2, , Vieques, 00765, Puerto Rico

An edgy, off-beat inn run along the lines of a Berkeley, California, commune, this eco-friendly hillside getaway seemingly miles from anywhere has an irresistible rustic appeal. It's not for everyone, but convivial, gregarious folks with a taste for barefoot back-to-basics will love it. Edgy and funky, it's even been the setting for a J.Crew catalog shoot. Main-house guests share the common kitchen made of roughhewn planks splashed with tropical, ice cream–colored pastels, with zinc for a roof. Hammocks are slung across the large wooden deck while four other self-catering casas dispersed among fruit trees have their own bathrooms. Guests in the basic dormlike rooms shower outside in roofless solar-heated stalls, but everyone can splash in the saltwater pool. Families are welcome, and all guests can browse books in the library, play board games, and borrow snorkeling gear or beach toys.
