The six Mediterranean-style villas here were the tiny island's first taste of luxury, and it's still a lovely place, largely due to its perch across sprawling lawns that overlook a breathtaking sea. The mood is plantation-style cozy, from the intimate, well-spaced guest rooms to the open-air lounge. Carambola, the inn's restaurant, was once the island's most sought-after reservation, but it's reputation has since dimmed, overshadowed by keen competition in Isabel Segunda and Esperanza, and marred by reports of uneven service—a reflection, perhaps of constantly changing management at the hotel itself. The general instability hasn't helped the property retain its popularity or return it to yesteryear's splendor.
