La Madre is a new kind of Mexican restaurant for San Juan, with a stylish young customer base to match. Yes, it covers the standards, including some very tasty fish tacos, but you'll also find innovative, modern interpretations of Mexican cuisine, like a Japanese-style marinated skirt steak with mashed plantains and grilled corn, or pork ribs marinated in beer and served with a chocolate-chili sauce. With well-priced margaritas, you can afford to try several of the unusual flavors, such as cucumber, soursop, Caribbean cherry, and tamarind. The sleek dining room feels artsy and dreamlike, with classic cartoons and old movies projected silently onto a wall. A DJ occasionally spins on weekends.
