A top-to-bottom renovation in 2011 banished this small inn's formerly drab room decor, and in its place are stylish rooms decorated in bright blues and whites, with brand-new mattresses and plasma-screen televisions. The feel is Asian tropical, with influences from Bali, Malaysia, and India. (Don't miss the stunning Malaysian woodcarvings throughout the property.) You'll definitely want an ocean-view room, preferably on the second floor, since first-floor rooms open right onto the deck of the on-site restaurant, Uvva—a possible downside for those who plan to use their patio. For larger groups, apartments are available in a separate back building.

Skip this place and find a better option in San Juan - while Hosteria del Mar enjoys a great location on Ocean Park beach, that's where the superlatives end. Slow, absolutely indifferent service, coupled with food that is average at best, and dark, cramped rooms make this a bad choice for an enjoyable, quiet stay. Travelers should note that the hotel has been increasing the number of wild and loud parties they host (almost every weekend) now that it is under new management, making it virtually impossible to have a quiet stay.
