Airports and Transfers. Aguadilla's

Aeropuerto Eugenio María de Hostos. Tiny Aeropuerto Eugenio María de Hostos, just north of Mayagüez on Highway 2, looks a bit like a strip mall. There's little inside besides the car-rental counters and an ATM machine. Hwy. 2, Km 148.7, Mayagüez, 00604. 787/833-0148.

There are no airport shuttles in either Aguadilla or Mayagüez. A taxi from either airport into town is about $6-$10, but if you are going any farther, you should rent a car.

Bus and Van Travel

No easy network of buses links the towns in the Porta del Sol region of northwestern Puerto Rico. Some municipalities and private companies operate buses and large shared vans (públicos) that travel from one city to another, but schedules are loose. But if you're adventurous and not easily frustrated, it's possible to arrange for cheap transportation from San Juan to Aguadilla, Rincón, and Mayagüez, among other towns. Prices from terminal to terminal are set, but drivers may go to another destination if arranged beforehand.

Choferes Unidos travels from San Juan to Aguadilla for about $10 per person. Linea Sultana has vans from San Juan to Mayagüez that also drop off passengers along Highway 2 in Aguada, Quebradillas, and Isabela; the price is about $12 per person. Línea Caborrojeña travels between San Juan and Cabo Rojo.
