Fodor's Review

Granted, it's not traditional Puerto Rican fare nor does it have anything to do with the local culture, but the authentic German food at this restaurant will make you feel as if you're on a vacation from your vacation. Owner Jacob Elmstrom—of German descent—has gone to great lengths to recreate the flavors of Deutschland. Everything is homemade, including the bratwurst (sausage), sauerbraten (beef marinated in red wine), and kasseler rippchen (smoked pork chops). All the classics are served with red cabbage, bread dumplings, or spätzle. The schnitzels (there are three types) are ridiculously flavorful, and there are plenty of imported beers to wash down the goodness. As much as locals love the German cuisine, they also come for the Italian dishes like pumpkin ravioli or sausage tagliatelle, all made from scratch. Of course a meal wouldn't be complete without hot apple strudel. If you happen to be in Rincon during the month of October, Das Alpen holds celebrates oktoberfest.
