Fodor's Expert Review Howard Johnson Downtown Mayagüez

70 Calle Méndez Vigo, Mayagüez, n/a Puerto Rico, 00681, Puerto Rico

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

Housed in a former monastery, this downtown hotel still has stained-glass windows in some rooms and a stone cross on the roof. The rooms are mostly small—they were originally for monks, after all—but more stylish than those in your standard chain hotel. The best are the colorful accommodations designed for families with kids.

PROS

  • interesting building
  • rooms designed for families and businesspeople
  • central location

CONS

  • far from the beach
  • rooms and bathrooms need some updating
  • noise from nearby bars
