There's nothing like this hotel anywhere else in San Juan—or Puerto Rico, for that matter. The brainchild of local fashion icon Nono Maldonado, this luxury lodging has a look that's completely au courant. Bursts of color from red pillows or gold upholstery on the banquettes add considerable warmth. And the amenities are above and beyond other hotels. Splurge for one of the larger suites and you get a butler who'll come to mix cocktails; the two-level presidential suite comes with a car and driver. The rooftop terrace has a bar, a hot tub, and an area for massages. Only one downside: this colonial-era building is on a side street, so it doesn't have a view of the water. But with such a gorgeous interior, you may not even notice. Pros: historic property; boutique-hotel feel; doting staff. Cons: no view; street noise on weekends.
