A gem of the architectural movement called Tropical Modernism, La Concha has been treated to a $181 million renovation, and it looks as good as it did when it first opened in 1958. No, it actually looks better. After consulting with original architect Toro Ferrer, the design team has restored many of the original elements, such as the round-roof pool cabanas that give the front facade such a distinctive look. But they also insisted that it appeal to modern tastes, so the glassed-in lobby (centered around a bar serving dozens of kinds of rum) opens out onto a spacious patio with a multilevel swimming pool. The ample rooms have a geometric feel, with all the lines pointing out to sea. They are also marvels of intelligent design—for example, that sleek leather sofa is actually a full-size pullout bed. Pros: amazing architecture; near the city's best shopping; all rooms face the ocean. Cons: ongoing construction at two nearby properties; rooms near the pool area can be noisy.
