The name means "The Salty Bull," and there is something about this restaurant that makes the name seem entirely appropriate. (And we're not just talking about the bullfighting posters that decorate one of the two-story-high walls.) This tapas place was opened by Emilio Figueroa, who helped turn the southern end of Calle Fortaleza into the city's top dining destination. El Toro Salao is not on South Fortaleza, but its brash attitude makes it clearly part of the SoFo bunch. There are plenty of small dishes to share, as well as heartier fare like blackened tuna in sweet paprika and grilled octopus with a sun-dried tomato vinaigrette. The dining room, where a bar illuminated in red gives it a lusty look, is pleasant enough, but the tables that spill out onto an adjacent cobblestone square are even better.
