The century-old tamarind tree rising through the center of the main building gives this plantation-style house its name. With its barrel-tile roof and wood-shuttered windows, it's one of the most beautiful hotels on the island. Finding a spot all to yourself is easy, whether it's on a shady terrace or beside the spectacular pool. The guest rooms were individually decorated by Linda Vail, who runs the place along with her husband, Burr. "Caribbean chic" might be the best way to describe her effortless way of combining well-chosen antiques, elegant wicker furniture, and vintage travel posters. The nicest room might be No. 1, which is in a separate building and has a private terrace overlooking the ocean. The beach is nearby, but you'll need a car to get there. Pros: beautiful views; nicely designed rooms; best breakfasts on the island. Cons: drive to beaches; small parking lot.
